JBL HDI-3800 – A formidable floorstander
The HDI-3600 is the largest floorstanding speaker in JBL’s HDI series, and you can certainly hear it. The sound reproduction is really punchy, big, dynamic and accurate at the highest sound pressure levels. This feat is due to the speaker’s 2.5-way design and 3 x 8″ aluminium cone woofers, which handle frequency ranges much higher than normally seen. This means that the top 8″ aluminium unit goes all the way up to 1800 Hz, giving it a fantastically open midrange that really brings out the vocal performance. The two bottom 8″ woofers start from 800 Hz and down, where they play with a power rarely experienced. Something else that makes this speaker really special is the patented 1″ 2410H-2 tweeter, which is mounted in JBL’s High Definition Imaging waveguide. What this waveguide does is disperse the sound much better, giving you a much larger sweet spot. So you get a perfect stereo image, no matter where you sit.
The design features a sophisticated, curved cabinet that JBL has braced at specific areas to reduce internal resonances to a negligible level. The front grille is black and attaches magnetically for easy mounting and dismounting, and the speaker is available in a beautiful gloss black, grey oak veneer and walnut veneer to complete the luxurious look. Two bass reflex ports are mounted on the back, which do their job to perfection, and there’s even the option of bi-wiring if you wish.
